St Martin, Exning
St Philip w St Etheldreda, Newmarket
St Nicholas, Landwade
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the
desert to be tempted by the devil.
After fasting for forty days & nights,
he was hungry.
From Matthew chapter 4 verses 1 & 2
‘Tradition! Tradition!’
Who remembers Topol singing these words in the
musical ‘Fiddler on the Roof’? His character was
somewhat perplexed at all the changes taking
place in his community & the world around him -
making him question everything he believed.
On the 22nd of this month
it will be Ash Wednesday, the beginning
of Lent, which is preceded by Shrove
Tuesday…..often referred to as Pancake
Day or even as a day named after a certain
brand of lemon juice! However you think of it,
making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday is one
tradition that most of us enjoy! However, it
seems to be one of our traditions that has
changed from a once a year occurrence to
any time of year – think of Easter eggs
available just after Christmas or hot cross buns
constantly on the supermarket shelf!
Whatever the tradition that seems to
have ‘lost its way’, let’s make a point of
remembering the real reason behind them:
preparation for Lent (pancakes), the Crucifixion
(hot cross buns) and the Resurrection (eggs as a
sign of new life)!
Every blessing,
Ann Mc
